National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War
Perched on the Pechersk hills above the Dnipro River, the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War is Kyiv's most powerful monument to the millions of lives Ukraine lost during the 1939–1945 conflict—and a living chronicle of the nation's ongoing struggle for independence. The memorial complex spans roughly 11 hectares and is anchored by the towering 102-metre Motherland Monument, one of the tallest sculptures in Europe. Inside its pedestal, sixteen exhibition halls hold more than 300,000 artifacts, while the grounds feature military hardware, sculptural narratives of pivotal battles, and sweeping observation decks. Since 2022, the museum has been actively documenting Russia's full-scale invasion, making it a rare institution where the history on display is still unfolding.
