Pětnice - rozhledna Christiana Battaglii
On a low hill called Volyně between the villages of Záboří and Čečelovice, about 20 km northwest of Strakonice in South Bohemia, the 35-metre Pětnice Lookout Tower rewards a short climb with a sweeping panorama over the Blatná, Horažďovice and Strakonice countryside toward the forests of Šumava and the Brdy highlands. It is a slim steel telecommunications mast wrapped in a lattice stairway, taking 138 steps to reach the open viewing deck at 25 metres. The tower is named for the hillside wood (Pětnice) that surrounds it and, since 2025, for the eccentric local cycling legend Baron Christian Battaglia (1914–1991), whose tomb lies in the Záboří cemetery. After five closed years it was revived by the Club of Friends of Lookout Towers (KPR), who now run it on Saturdays through the season for a small fee, with stamps and souvenirs at the booth.
