Heritage Gold Mine Park
Heritage Gold Mine Park, on North Mine Street just outside McCormick, South Carolina, puts you inside one of the most important gold-mining sites in the state—a real 1850s lode you can walk into, tour, and even pan for gold at. It is where area resident William Burkhalter Dorn struck what is described as the second-richest vein of gold in South Carolina's history, and where the inventor Cyrus Hall McCormick later spent a fortune in a fruitless search for more. Today the park blends a National Register-listed historic mine with hands-on, family-friendly activities: guided and self-guided mine tours that take you past an open trench, shafts and a horizontal tunnel, plus panning for natural gold and screening buckets for gemstones, with what you find yours to keep. A relaxed, low-key stop run by its owner-operator, it suits curious kids, homeschool and church groups, and anyone wanting to learn basic gold panning near the Georgia line.
