Seonsan-eup

Gumi · KR

Seonsan-eup

Seonsan-eup is the historic heart around which the modern city of Gumi grew. Once a county seat in its own right—Seonsan, named in 1413 in the early Joseon period—this large village of roughly 69 km² in Gyeongsangbuk-do keeps the calm, river-flat atmosphere of an old Korean market town, with rice paddies, a low walled town centre and, on its edges, one of the most quietly important Confucian academies in the country. The draw here is Neo-Confucian heritage rather than nightlife. Seonsan earned a national reputation as a 'home of talent': the late-Goryeo scholar Gil Jae retired here, refusing to serve the new Joseon dynasty and instead teaching generations of students whose lineages went on to shape early-Joseon philosophy. Two Joseon-era schools, the Geumo Seowon academy and the Seonsan hyanggyo, are the standing monuments to that story, and together they make Seonsan a rewarding half-day stop for travellers interested in Korean scholarly tradition.
