Kalochori Lagoon
Just eight kilometers from the heart of Thessaloniki, Kalochori Lagoon is one of Greece's most unlikely and most rewarding escapes from the city. A shallow coastal wetland at the northern gate of Axios Delta National Park, it is a place where flamingos wade within a few meters of visitors while the cranes of Thessaloniki's port and a fringe of factories glimmer on the horizon—an unforgettable meeting of wilderness and urban Greece. Roughly 10 minutes by car from the center, the lagoon is open around the clock, free to wander, and easy enough for families, dog-walkers and amateur birders alike. A kilometer-long path of red soil, gentle trails, and a wealth of waterbirds make it the nearest true taste of wild nature to a major Greek city.
