Olt
The Olt is Romania's longest river flowing entirely within its borders — 615 kilometers from its source in the eastern Carpathians to its meeting with the Danube. Known in Roman antiquity as Alutus, it gave its name to Oltenia and Olt County. The river threads through six counties, carving a spectacular 47-kilometer gorge through the Southern Carpathians, passing medieval monasteries, Roman castra, and some of the country's most dramatic mountain scenery. For travelers, the Olt offers two kinds of experience: the wild, paddler-friendly upper stretches through rural Transylvania, and the thunderous mountain gorge where the river narrows between the Făgăraș and Lotru massifs. Whether viewed from a kayak, a scenic road, or a monastery garden, the Olt is one of Romania's most compelling natural corridors.
