Statue of Rennyo

On a quiet pine-covered hill in Yoshizaki, at the far northern edge of Fukui and the old Echizen–Kaga border, stands the Statue of Rennyo (蓮如上人像): a bronze monument to Rennyo, the eighth head priest of Hongan-ji and the great 'restorer' of the Jodo Shinshu Buddhist tradition. The figure watches over the Yoshizaki Gobo ruins, a nationally designated historic site that was once the missionary headquarters from which, in 1471, Rennyo spread his teaching of Amida's saving 'other-power' faith across the Hokuriku coast and the whole of Japan. The statue itself is a work of art worth the journey on its own: cast by the celebrated sculptor Takamura Kōun (1852–1934) and counted among his four masterpieces. Set in a memorial park shaded by black pines, it pairs with the surrounding historic sites—the priest's 'Sitting Stone', the old main-hall foundations, a haiku stele—and sweeping views over Kitakata Lagoon toward the Sea of Japan, making this a rare blend of sculpture, religious history and coastal scenery.
