Ptichiy Dvor
Tucked behind an ordinary apartment building on Ulitsa Chaplygina in central Moscow, Ptichiy Dvor ('Bird Yard') is exactly what its name promises: a small, scrappy courtyard collection of birds kept alive by the quiet devotion of a local resident. It is not a ticketed zoo but a free urban aviary where city-dwellers on their way about can pause to meet peacocks, swans, ducks and crested pigeons a few steps from the pavement. Visitors describe it as a pocket oasis in the middle of the city, and it has its fans for precisely that reason: a working bird yard, run informally and open to look at without charge, is an unexpected sight in a dense central district. At the same time, it is a modest and unconventional attraction with limited space, so temper expectations accordingly and treat it as a fleeting curiosity rather than a destination in itself.
