Reka Malaya Kokshaga
The Malaya Kokshaga (Mari: Izi Kokshan) is a 194-kilometer river that flows entirely within the Mari El Republic of Russia—the longest waterway wholly contained within this small republic. A left tributary of the Volga, it feeds the vast Kuibyshev Reservoir near the village of Kokshaysk and, remarkably, bisects the Mari El landscape roughly in half, earning it the nickname of the region's backbone. For travelers, this river offers a rare window into the natural heart of Mari El: a meandering waterway threaded through mixed forests, boggy lowlands, and mirror-studded floodplain meadows, with a surprisingly rich history as a transport route and spiritual landscape for the Mari people.
