AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Lake Kaniere is a calm, forest-ringed lake about 19 km east of Hokitika on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island. Encircled on three sides by steep mountains and fringed by native bush that runs right down to the water, it is one of the region's favourite spots for a laid-back day outdoors—swimming, boating, fishing and short forest walks are all on the doorstep.↗↗
Its placid, sheltered surface and easy access from State Highway make it one of the best lakes in the area for water sports, while the surrounding Lake Kaniere Scenic Reserve offers a mix of easy strolls and a serious multi-hour walk. The lake is also the source of Hokitika's water supply, and the historic Kaniere Water Race, an 11-kilometre channel carrying water toward town, has become a popular cycling and walking route.↗↗
A lake built for easy days
Snow-dusted peaks in winter, dense rainforest at the shoreline, and a smooth glassy surface make Lake Kaniere feel remote even though it is a short drive from Hokitika. From the road end at 'The Landing', the lake opens up ahead, and the shoreline divides toward the holiday-home bays of Sunny Bight and Hans Bay, where a string of picnic spots, swimming beaches and a lakeside campsite invite you to linger.
