A Campus Built by Masters

CENART is considered one of Mexico's most important works of contemporary architecture, bringing together buildings designed by a who's who of national architects. Ricardo Legorreta crafted the School of Painting, Sculpture and Engraving "La Esmeralda" with its distinctive rectangular plan and brick barrel vaults, and also designed the Centro Multimedia and the Aula Magna José Vasconcelos—whose tiled facade was created by visual artist Vicente Rojo. Teodoro González de León gave us the School of Music and its companion, the Auditorio Blas Galindo, notable for its chiseled white concrete texture and tilted walls that play with light and shadow. Enrique Norten designed the National School of Theater, while Luis Vicente Flores created the National School of Dance, whose administrative wing features a complex steel-and-glass structure topped by an elliptical metal canopy. Alfonso López Baz and Javier Calleja collaborated on the Teatro de las Artes, the campus's flagship performance hall.↗↗↗

Even if you're not here for a specific show, the campus itself rewards a slow walk. The 12-hectare grounds connect plazas, gardens, and buildings with pedestrian paths, and the sheer variety of architectural approaches—from Legorreta's bold color blocks to González de León's sculptural concrete—makes it an open-air museum of late-20th-century Mexican design.↗

Performance Venues

The campus holds an impressive constellation of performance spaces. The Teatro de las Artes seats 606 and hosts the biggest productions—musicals, opera, dance companies, and interdisciplinary shows from both national and international artists. The Auditorio Blas Galindo, with its 600 seats and acoustics designed for classical music, is the home of orchestral and chamber performances. For dance, the Teatro Raúl Flores Canelo seats 336 and includes an orchestra pit with lift system. Smaller but equally compelling are the Teatro Salvador Novo (150 seats with adjustable seating for experimental work), the Foro Antonio López Mancera (a 70-seat black box), and the Plaza de las Artes—an open-air venue for 1,500 where free concerts and community events happen regularly.↗↗

The programming calendar is dense year-round. In 2025 alone, it included theater productions like a sold-out staging of A Streetcar Named Desire at the Salvador Novo, contemporary dance seasons at the Plaza de la Danza, family concerts at the Auditorio Blas Galindo, and the Ambulante documentary film tour screenings on the green areas.↗

Exhibitions and Galleries

The Galería Central, in the main building's lobby, is the campus's primary exhibition space—a 380-square-meter hall that has hosted shows ranging from digital projections of Renaissance masterworks to solo exhibitions of Mexican painters, photographers, sculptors, and illustrators. Past shows have drawn crowds for months, and the gallery is considered one of Mexico's leading university-level exhibition venues. Its programming spills into the Galería Espacio Alternativo and the smaller Galería Arte Binario on campus, plus the Galería Manuel Felguérez inside the Centro Multimedia.↗↗

Exhibitions typically run for about two months, and the calendar is packed nearly year-round. Recent examples include a major drawing exhibition ("Cachorros de tigre: A Possible Universe of Drawing in Mexico"), contemporary textile art, photography by women documenting daily life, and painting biennials—giving visitors a cross-section of what's happening across Mexico's visual arts scene.↗↗

Eurojazz and Major Festivals

Every year, CENART's green areas transform into one of Latin America's most important jazz festivals. Eurojazz, organized since 1998 in partnership with the European Union delegation in Mexico, brings groups from across Europe alongside Mexican acts. Recent editions featured 21 concerts over two weekends with bands from Austria, France, Poland, Spain, Finland, Italy, Hungary, Slovakia, and the Netherlands, with admission completely free. The 2025 edition drew over 90,000 visitors across multiple stages, with food vendors, craft markets, workshops, and a dedicated sensory-friendly area for neurodivergent attendees.↗↗↗

Beyond Eurojazz, the campus hosts other regular events including open-air cinema nights (a recurring programming element), inclusive performing arts festivals, literary picnics on the lawn, and children's workshops during school seasons. The Centro Multimedia organizes digital art workshops, motion graphics classes, and experimental sound sessions that draw a younger, tech-curious crowd.↗↗

Schools and Research

CENART is home to five professional art schools belonging to Mexico's Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes: the National School of Dance, the National School of Theater, the National School of Music, the National School of Painting, Sculpture and Engraving "La Esmeralda," and the Film Training Center (CCC). These are working institutions—students rehearse, build sets, paint, perform, and film on campus daily. You might catch a free student performance, see a dance rehearsal through glass studio walls, or walk past film crews setting up a shot.↗↗

Four national research and documentation centers for music, theater, dance, and visual arts also operate here, alongside the Biblioteca de las Artes—one of Mexico's most important specialized arts libraries, which itself hosts exhibitions and film clubs.↗

Cineteca Nacional de las Artes

In 2023, CENART's cultural offering expanded significantly with the opening of the Cineteca Nacional de las Artes, featuring 12 screens dedicated primarily to contemporary Mexican cinema and independent international productions. This converted a former commercial cinema complex into a curated arthouse venue, giving film lovers a new reason to visit the campus beyond its performing arts programming.↗
