AT A GLANCE
Why go?
On Cancún's hotel-zone strip, where the boulevard meets the Nichupté Lagoon, a slender observation wheel turns slowly above a seafront shopping village. Sky Wheel Cancún—marketed abroad as the Ferris Wheel Cancun—lifts riders about 65 to 70 metres into the air, delivering a 360° panorama that takes in the Caribbean, the white-sand beaches and the lagoon's mangrove channels in a single sweeping view.↗↗↗↗
It is one of the tallest observation wheels in Latin America, designed and built by the Dutch firm Dutch Wheels, and it has become an easygoing, family-friendly landmark at the heart of the Zona Hotelera. Each rotation lasts only a quarter of an hour or so, yet it offers the clearest bird's-eye look at how Cancún's long sandbar city is laid out between two bodies of water.↗↗
The view from the top
The appeal of the Sky Wheel is the panorama itself. As the gondola rises above the surrounding low-rise shops and the lagoon, the hotel zone unrolls around you: the turquoise Caribbean along the seaward edge, a curving chain of beaches, and the calmer, inland waterways of the Nichupté Lagoon threading between the resorts. From the highest point you can make out the full sweep of Cancún's narrow strip of development, an orientation that is genuinely hard to get from street level.
