AT A GLANCE

Why go?

Bucheon Art Bunker B39 is one of the most striking cultural spaces near Seoul: a former city waste incinerator reborn as a museum of contemporary and digital art. Housed in a six-storey industrial shell where garbage was once burned, it keeps the raw concrete, towering walls and rusted machinery of its past life while hosting media-art installations, performances, exhibitions and even a cafe. It was the first facility of its kind in Korea to transform a closed incinerator into a public arts complex, and that tension between heavy industry and creative lightness is exactly what makes a visit memorable.↗↗↗

The name itself decodes the place: the three B's stand for Bucheon, Bunker and Borderless, while the 39 points to the height of the great concrete waste pit at its core and to the nearby national route. Today that pit has become the venue's signature room, a vertical concrete canyon crossed by a footbridge, where video and sound installations echo off walls that were once stuffed with refuse. Everywhere you look, old machinery and control rooms have been preserved as part of the experience rather than scrubbed away.↗
