AT A GLANCE
Why go?
The Capybara House at Awaji Farm Park England Hill is a dedicated enclosure opened in 2021 where visitors can watch South America's largest rodents lounging, swimming, and diving in a glass-walled pool. Located in the Greenhill area of this Lake District-themed agricultural park on Awaji Island, it offers an intimate up-close encounter with one of the animal kingdom's most chill inhabitants.↗↗
Capybaras are semi-aquatic rodents native to warm waterways around the Amazon basin. They can hold their breath underwater for more than five minutes, and here you can watch them do exactly that through the transparent pool walls. The facility is open from park opening until one hour before closing.↗
What to See at the Capybara House
Capybaras spend most of their day being unhurried. At the Capybara House you can observe them grazing, sunbathing, and napping in their enclosure — but the real highlight is the glass-walled pool. Press your face up to the transparent side and you'll see these barrel-shaped animals gliding underwater, completely at home. They can submerge for over five minutes at a time, thanks to eyes, ears, and nostrils positioned high on their heads. Watching a capybara sink below the surface and then pop back up is the kind of simple pleasure that makes kids forget about their phones entirely.
