AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Perched along the rugged Kasumi Coast of Kami Town in northern Hyogo, this Observatory (展望台) is a clifftop lookout where the San'in Kaigan's dark blue Sea of Japan spreads out in a near-unbroken panorama. Set within the San'in Coast National Park and UNESCO-recognized San'in Coast Geopark, it belongs to a coastline of sea cliffs, caves and wave-cut rock that the town promotes as one of Japan's best places to watch the sun go down.↗↗↗
What draws visitors is the sense of scale and the quality of light. From the open deck you can feel the curvature of the horizon over the open sea, watch storm-driven waves burst against the rocks below, and—on summer evenings—see the sun drop into the water and the fishing fires (isaribi) of the crab and squid boats begin to glitter along the horizon line.↗↗↗
For most travelers it is a stop on a wider Kasumi coast day-trip: easy to reach from JR Kasumi Station, a short ride from the famous hot-spring town of Kinosaki Onsen, and close to other viewpoints such as Okami Park and the Obiki cape. Pairing the lookout with a seaside ryokan lunch or an evening of snow-crab dining turns a quick photo stop into a memorable afternoon.
