Monumento a Paolo Borsellino

Battipaglia, IT

AT A GLANCE

Why go?

In the heart of Battipaglia, a small market town in the province of Salerno, a modest memorial stele gives a central public square its name. Piazza Paolo Borsellino is dedicated to the Italian anti-mafia judge assassinated by Cosa Nostra in Palermo on 19 July 1992, and the monument at its centre extends that remembrance to the five officers of his escort who died with him. It is not a grand tourist sight so much as a piece of civic conscience: a place where a community of southern Italy publicly reaffirms its stance against organised crime.↗↗↗

Unveiled on 27 April 2013, the monument was raised through local effort rather than state commission—a retired police officers' association, a masonry firm, a marble supplier and a plant nursery together gave shape to it. For visitors, the interest lies less in the sculpture itself than in the role the memorial plays in the town's calendar: every year on 19 July it becomes the setting for a public ceremony of flowers, speeches and student readings.↗↗

Who the memorial honours

Paolo Borsellino was a Sicilian magistrate who, alongside his close colleague Giovanni Falcone, led the most ambitious judicial offensive against the Mafia in the late 1980s. On 19 July 1992, just weeks after the Capaci bombing that killed Falcone, a car bomb on Via D'Amelio in Palermo took Borsellino's life together with five members of his police escort: Agostino Catalano, Emanuela Loi, Vincenzo Li Muli, Walter Eddie Cosina and Claudio Traina. Emanuela Loi, note the commemorations here, was the first female officer of the Italian police to fall in the line of duty.↗↗↗

The Battipaglia monument deliberately honours the six of them together—the judge and the men and woman who protected him—rather than Borsellino alone. Local ceremony language calls them "six servants of the State," and the dedication to the escort is what gives the memorial much of its emotional weight: it is as much about the ordinary officers as about the famous magistrate.↗↗

A civic monument, raised by the community

The stele was inaugurated on Saturday 27 April 2013 in a ceremony staged in close partnership with the ANOP association of retired police operators. It is a product of private and civic generosity: the structure was built thanks to local contractor Angelo Margarella, the marble was donated by the Ciliberti marmi firm, the surrounding greenery provided by Vivai Campanale, and much of the organisational work credited to Giuseppe Esposito. This origin gives the monument an unpolished, locally-owned character, very different from an official state memorial.↗

That community attachment was tested in March 2019, when, on Carnival day, unknown vandals defaced the stele with a blue spray can. The act was photographed and posted to Facebook by residents, triggering an outpouring of indignation across the town—an episode that, ironically, underlined how personally the people of Battipaglia take the memorial.↗

The square around it

The Borsellino stele shares its piazza with Battipaglia's older monument to the fallen of both World Wars, a tall engraved stone pedestal crowned by a bronze infantryman clutching a tattered flag. The war memorial stands in a railed flowerbed guarded at its entrance by two bronze lions with thick manes, with two mortars set on the grass beside it; its base carries commemorative inscriptions to the town's sons lost in 1915–18 and to the victims of the "tragic decade" of 1935–45. Walking between the two memorials, you trace a small but eloquent civic history: from the sacrifices of war to the more recent battle for legality.↗↗

Visiting and the date that matters

On any ordinary day the square is simply a quiet urban space with benches and planting, and the monument can be seen in a few minutes. If you want to feel its real significance, time your visit for 19 July, the anniversary of the Via D'Amelio bombing. On that morning the town gathers here for a ceremony: a wreath is laid before the monument, the citations for the officers' gold medals are read, local officials and police representatives speak, and students contribute readings—one memorable year a schoolgirl recited a monologue written in memory of Emanuela Loi.↗↗↗
