AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Perched atop a 66-million-year-old basalt monolith in the heart of Andheri West, Gaondevi Mandir is one of Mumbai's most remarkable sacred sites — both as a place of worship and as a window into the geological deep past. The white-walled temple honors Gaondevi, a local incarnation of the goddess Durga, whose name simply means 'village goddess' — the deity believed to watch over her people from on high. Reaching the sanctum requires climbing stairs carved directly into the ancient rock, rewarding visitors with one of the city's best panoramic views.↗↗↗
Gilbert Hill itself is a global rarity: one of only three known columnar basalt formations of its kind, the others being Devil's Tower in Wyoming and Devils Postpile in California. Declared a National Monument in 1952 and a Grade II heritage structure in 2007, the hill remains largely unknown to the very city that grew around it.↗↗
