AT A GLANCE
Why go?
On K. B. Basu Road at the busy Champadali crossing in Barasat — the district capital of North 24 Parganas, just north of Kolkata — the Shri Shri Boromaa Kali Mandir is one of the most revered neighbourhood shrines in the area. Devotees simply call her Boro Maa, "the Great Mother," and the temple has become a centre of intense, living faith rather than a quiet monument.↗↗
What sets this Kali temple apart is its combination of devotional warmth and unusual ritual practice. Here Maa Kali is worshipped strictly with vegetarian offerings — no animal sacrifice — and temple priests and visitors alike tell stories of wishes granted and hardships lifted for those who come to her court. The shrine is open to all free of charge, and on Tuesdays and Saturdays prasad is distributed to the gathered devotees.↗↗↗
A Shrine Built on Faith
Local belief holds that no one leaves empty-handed from Boro Maa's side, and the head priest, who has long served the deity, describes the steady flow of visitors as driven less by custom than by deep personal trust. Devotees travel from far afield to whisper their wishes at the sanctum, to light lamps and to offer flowers, while the air inside the mandir is filled with the murmur of prayers and the lingering scent of incense.
