AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Platamonas Beach stretches along the coast of Pieria in northern Greece, where the green foothills of Mount Olympus meet the Aegean Sea beneath a medieval Byzantine castle. A series of sandy and pebbly coves—some organized with beach bars, others free and quiet—offer crystal-clear, wind-sheltered waters that make this one of the most attractive seaside destinations on the Olympic Riviera.↗↗
In summer, Platamonas swells to ten times its year-round population as Greek and Balkan families flood toward its Blue Flag waters, the lively promenade tavernas, and the rare triple backdrop of mountain, fortress, and sea.↗↗
A Coast of Many Faces
When locals speak of "the beach," they mean not a single strip but a succession of small coves and straight stretches that follow one another along several kilometres of coastline. Depending on where you settle your towel, the shore alternates between golden sand, fine gravel, and small pebbles, while beneath the surface the sea floor stays sandy and shallow. This variety lets you spend the morning at a bustling beach bar and the afternoon on a freer stretch where you simply walk straight into the water.
