AT A GLANCE
Why go?
On the southeastern edge of the tiny island town of Aitoliko, where the Messolonghi lagoon meets the sea, stands a museum unlike any other in Greece or Europe: the Vaso Katraki Museum, dedicated exclusively to the art of engraving and printmaking. Opened in 2006 in the artist's birthplace, it houses her complete bequeathed collection—over four hundred prints, wood and stone matrices, drawings, and preparatory sketches—alongside her personal workshop and library.↗↗↗
Vasso Katraki (1914–1988) was one of Greece's most celebrated graphic artists. After studying painting under Konstantinos Parthenis and engraving under Giannis Kefallinos at the Athens School of Fine Arts, she developed an original technique carving directly into sandstone—a medium few engravers have ever attempted—earning international prizes at the Venice Biennale, Alexandria Biennale, and Lugano Biennale. Her work moves from intimate scenes of lagoon fishermen and farmers to monumental, archetypal figures echoing Cycladic art and the tragedies of 20th-century Greece.↗
