AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Littlebredy Lake & Waterfall is a small, postcard-perfect beauty spot in the village of Littlebredy, about seven miles west of Dorchester in Dorset. A dammed lake on the Bridehead Estate spills over a low cascade into the steep Bride Valley, a scene so pastoral that it has been compared to the pages of a Thomas Hardy novel and used as a filming location for the TV crime drama Broadchurch.↗↗↗
For decades visitors enjoyed the waterfall and lake under a permissive path granted by the Williams family, and it became one of west Dorset's most loved and photographed hidden gems. Following the 2025 sale of the estate, public access was suspended while a health-and-safety review of the routes, trees and open water is carried out, and the new owners say they intend to reopen if the issues can be resolved—so check the latest status before making a special trip.↗↗
A Cascade in the Bride Valley
The attraction takes its name from the water itself. Bridehead Lake, set just below the Regency manor house, is fed by the River Bride, whose rising springs lie on the estate; the village name traces back to a Celtic root meaning 'surging stream'. Water gathers in the near-rectangular lake, dotted with a small central island, and escapes at its northern tip as a low, gentle cascade built from steps and ornamental rockwork. From the village side, the fall spills veil-like over the dam before rushing down into the valley below, its sound mingling with birdsong and wind in the surrounding beeches.
