AT A GLANCE
Why go?
On the inner shore of Vanhankaupunki Bay, a short walk from the Viikki housing area, Pornaistenniemi is one of Helsinki's gentlest and most surprising escapes: a leafy alder grove that has been protected as a nature reserve since 2016, laced with an easy, fully accessible nature trail barely a kilometre long. Despite its small size, the eight-hectare woodland has yielded among the highest recorded counts of polypore and orchid species studied anywhere in Finland, and it sits at the edge of the city's largest wetland reserve.↗↗
Created under Helsinki's "Vihreät Sylit" (Green Embraces) initiative, the trail is deliberately designed as a place to slow down and restore your energy, with a series of ten stations that pair snippets of nature writing with small reflective exercises you can follow as you walk. It is an ideal outing for families, dog walkers and anyone who wants birdsong, water and wildflowers without leaving the city.↗
A pocket of wild forest beside the city
Pornaistenniemi's defining feature is its lush, sheltered alder forest (tervaleppälehto), a dense stand of grey alder that was set aside as a nature reserve in 2016. The trees, damp ground and abundance of decaying wood make it a haven for fungi: researchers have recorded 56 species of polypore and 99 species of orchid here, numbers that rank among the highest documented for such areas in Finland.
