AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Housed within Donghua University — one of China's foremost institutions for textile science — the Shanghai Museum of Textile and Costume is the country's only museum dedicated to the full sweep of Chinese textile and costume history, from ancient looms to modern fashion technology. Spread across four pavilions and over 3,000 square meters of exhibition space, it tells the story of how China wove, dyed, and dressed itself across millennia.↗↗
The museum is free to enter, open Tuesday through Saturday, and particularly rewarding for families and anyone curious about the craftsmanship behind China's legendary silks and brocades.↗
Four Floors, Four Stories of Cloth
The museum unfolds across four themed pavilions, each on a different floor, creating a natural narrative arc from hands-on science to deep history.↗
On the ground floor, the Science & Technology Pavilion invites you to touch, spin, and print. Interactive stations let visitors try computer embroidery, knitting, machine weaving, and ink-jet printing. You can paint a T-shirt, tie traditional Chinese frog buttons (pankou), design jewelry, or use digital tools to mix and match garment styles. This is the section that keeps children entertained for an hour and adults surprised at how much they learn through doing.
