AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Balneario Municipal is Berisso's quietest answer to the summer beach day: a free, no-frills public strand on the Río de la Plata, about 15 kilometres east of the city centre, where a short dirt road opens onto a wide, low bank of sand and water. It is one of four officially enabled bathing beaches along Berisso's 22-kilometre riverfront, and the one locals choose when they want space, birdsong and the slow drift of the estuary rather than the crowds of the bigger balnearios.↗↗
The draw here is its laid-back, nature-first character. The river continually reshapes this stretch of coast, so the beach feels wilder and less manicured than a resort: weathered old fishing jetties (espigones) reach out into the shallows, reeds and low coastal scrub fringe the edges, and on a clear day the far shore of Uruguay sits as a faint line on the horizon. In the warm months the municipality staffs it with lifeguards, toilets, food vendors and health and security cover, so you can swim and picnic without worrying about the basics.↗↗
