1 / 4Austria · Alpine lakeside village
Hallstatt is an impossibly scenic alpine village, its pastel houses squeezed between a mirror-calm lake and the sheer walls of the Salzkammergut mountains. Its ancient salt mines remain central to its identity, and the village offers just four hotels, making an overnight stay a rare and quiet pleasure.

The best time to visit Hallstatt is from May to September, when temperatures are mild to warm, ranging from 18°C to 24°C. June and September are the most pleasant months, with fewer rain days and comfortable conditions for exploring the lakeside and viewpoints. July and August are the warmest but also the rainiest, with about 20 rain days per month. Winter months are cold and damp, with temperatures near freezing, making them less ideal for outdoor sightseeing.
Stay in the old town around the Marketplace and lakeshore for the classic postcard views and easy access to the Panoramic Viewpoint and Hallstätter See. The Lahn district, a short walk south, is quieter and closer to the Salzwelten cable car. Seehotel Grüner Baum and Heritage Hotel Hallstatt sit right on the water in the old town, while Gasthof Pension Grüner Anger is in Lahn.
Start at the Panoramic Viewpoint for the classic postcard view over the lake and village. The Skywalk offers a higher, sweeping panorama. Salzwelten Hallstatt, the ancient salt mine, is a fascinating underground tour. Walk the lakeside promenade at Hallstätter See, and see the historic Marketplace with its colorful houses and the Evangelische Pfarrkirche. The 5 Fingers viewing platform extends over the Alps for a dramatic outlook.
The full-day tours from Hallstatt go to Salzburg, Cesky Krumlov, and Prague. Salzburg is known for its baroque old town and Mozart heritage. Cesky Krumlov is a small, picturesque town with a castle above the river. Prague offers a grand historic center with landmarks like the Charles Bridge and Old Town Square. The e-bike tour explores the local lakes and mountains around Hallstatt itself.
Two days is enough to see the main sights: the Panoramic Viewpoint, the Skywalk, Salzwelten Hallstatt, and a walk around the Marketplace and the lake. If you want to add a day trip, plan for a third day. One day feels rushed for the salt mine and viewpoints.
