Kuş Kayası Yol Anıtı
The Kuş Kayası Road Monument is a remarkable 1st-century Roman relief carved directly into a cliff face along the ancient coastal road between Bartın and Amasra on Turkey's Black Sea shore. Unique in Anatolia, this roadside shrine combines a life-size figure in an arched niche, a monumental eagle perched on a column, and bilingual Latin-Greek inscriptions — all cut into volcanic rock nearly 2,000 years ago. Commissioned by the Roman governor Gaius Julius Aquila between 41 and 54 CE in honour of Emperor Claudius, the monument served as both a statement of imperial power and a practical rest stop for travellers on the mountain road. Today it remains one of the most atmospheric and unexpected encounters you can have along the Black Sea coast.
