Sergej Mašera Maritime Museum
On Piran's waterfront, where the town's old harbour meets a graceful 19th-century palace, the Sergej Mašera Maritime Museum tells the story of a coastline shaped by the sea. Founded in 1954 and named for a pioneer of Slovenian maritime research, it gathers ship models, fishing gear, underwater finds, paintings and the everyday tools of sailors into one atmospheric collection that makes a wet, windy Piran afternoon feel just as rewarding as a sunny one on the beach. What sets the museum apart is its setting as much as its exhibits. It occupies the Gabrielli Palace, a classicist building of the mid-1800s raised directly along the harbour—a palace museum in the truest sense, where you climb a grand staircase past model vessels and fishing displays. Out in the water in front of the windows, the museum's own sailboat, the Galeb, sits moored as a floating exhibit, so even a glance from the quay gives you a taste of the collection.
