Gammplatsen
Gammplatsen is an open-air museum and cultural landscape on a wooded peninsula in the Ume River, just outside Lycksele in southern Lapland, Sweden. The site has been a meeting ground for centuries—Sami, settlers, and traders gathered here for church festivals, markets, and parliaments from the early 1600s onward. Today the area brings together a living heritage village, the Forest and Saami Museum, a cultural botanical garden, and a 400-to-500-year-old pine forest nature reserve, making it one of the most layered and atmospheric visits in inland Västerbotten. Whether you spend an hour wandering among turf huts and old schoolhouses or combine the museum with a woodland walk along the river, Gammplatsen offers a tangible encounter with the intertwined stories of Sami and farming communities in the Swedish subarctic.
