Svyato-Uspenskiy Kafedral'nyy Sobor

The Dormition Cathedral—also called the Assumption Cathedral, or Uspensky Sobor in Russian—is the grandest statement of medieval Vladimir and, by extension, of white-stone architecture in Russia. Consecrated in 1160 and raised higher than the great cathedrals of Kyiv and Novgorod, it stood for centuries as the chief church of the Russian land, the place where princes were crowned and where the most revered icon of the Virgin was kept. Today it sits on a high bluff above the Klyazma River, its golden domes forming part of the skyline that defines the old capital. What makes it irresistible to a visitor is that this is one of the very few Russian monuments where you can stand beneath original frescoes by Andrei Rublev, the most celebrated name in Russian icon painting. Painted in 1408 with his fellow master Daniil Chorny, his work survives here over a larger area than anywhere else—more than 300 square metres—crowned by a luminous 'Last Judgment.' The cathedral is also a royal necropolis, a coronation church, the prototype that a later architect copied to build Moscow's Kremlin Dormition, and, since 1992, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Now jointly a museum and a working Orthodox cathedral, the Dormition balances scholarly exhibits with the living services of the Vladimir eparchy. The practical visit is short but extraordinary: cross Cathedral Square, climb the gentle hill, and step out of the Russian weather into a vast cool interior where eight centuries of faith and art press in around you.
