Lake Ayer Itam Dam
A few kilometres southwest of George Town, hidden in the hills just behind Kek Lok Si Temple, Ayer Itam Dam is one of Penang's best-loved local escapes. Part working reservoir, part shaded hillside park, it pairs a calm green lake with sweeping views back over the city and a smooth paved path that loops the water. It is a place Penangites jog, walk and picnic through at dawn and dusk, yet few visitors think to look for it. What makes the spot special is how easily it combines nature, history and an easy walk. Commissioned in 1962, it was the largest dam in Malaya when it opened and the first major engineering project of the old George Town City Council. Today it still supplies water to the Air Itam and Paya Terubong suburbs, while the embankment and perimeter road have become a favourite circuit for walkers, runners and cyclists seeking cool hill air a short ride from the coast.
