Kanō School Memorial Hall (Former Kanō School Building)
In the quiet farming town of Tomi, at the foot of Nagano's eastern highlands, the Kanō School Memorial Hall stands as one of the best surviving snapshots of how Japan learned to build for the modern age. Completed in 1879, in the twelfth year of the Meiji era, this two-storey wooden schoolhouse is the third-oldest surviving school building in Nagano Prefecture—after the famous Nakagomi School in Saku and the Kaichi School in Matsumoto—and the oldest in the Ueda and Omi area. Designated a Nagano Prefectural Treasure in 1979, it has been saved from the demolition that claimed so many Meiji classrooms and reopened as a small, heartfelt local museum. What makes the building memorable is not its size but its blend of two worlds. The villagers of Kanō were determined to raise young people who were "Japanese at heart, Western in knowledge"—the wakon-yōsai ideal—and they poured that ambition straight into the architecture. A traditional Japanese hipped-and-gabled tile roof sits over an interior of arched doorways, plank floors and chair-style seating, so the hall reads as one long argument between East and West made in timber.
