Normanno
Perched on the highest point of Morano Calabro, the Norman-Swabian Castle is a fortress that has watched over the valley of the Coscile (the ancient Sybaris) for nearly a thousand years. Now partially in ruin but carefully stabilized and open to visitors, its surviving towers and restored ramparts frame one of Calabria's finest panoramas out toward the Pollino massif. What makes it worth the climb is the layering of its history: a Roman posting ground, a Norman watchtower, a Swabian and Angevin stronghold, a grand early-1500s reconstruction modeled on the great Castel Nuovo in Naples, and a violent end under French bombardment in 1806. You can still read each era in the superimposed masonry and the twin front towers. Today the castle is a cultural venue as well as a monument, hosting exhibitions and events, and it anchors a visit to Morano Calabro itself— regularly ranked among Italy's most beautiful villages— with its collegiate churches and the nearby cloister of San Bernardino.
