Moulin de Saint-Julien
The Moulin de Saint-Julien is a beautifully converted 15th-century watermill on the banks of the Loiret river, just south of Orléans. Once a fulling mill for wool cloth and later a flour producer serving local villages for more than five centuries, it now operates as an intimate guesthouse where the medieval architecture meets modern comfort — complete with a swimming pool seemingly floating over the mill pond. Even if you're not staying overnight, the mill is a highlight of the lovely walking trail that follows the Loiret past a string of former watermills and grand riverside estates, each with its own story of monastic power, industrial revolution, and quiet reinvention.
