musée Petiet de Limoux
The Musée Petiet in Limoux, a small town in France's Aude department, is a hidden gem of 19th-century French painting. Born in 1880 from a family's act of generosity, it houses an intimate collection that spans academic masterworks and early post-impressionist experiments—all displayed within the atmospheric setting of converted townhouses with original skylights, painted walls, and antique floor tiles. At the heart of the collection are the paintings of Marie Petiet (1854–1893), a talented artist who trained in the Paris atelier of Jean-Jacques Henner. Her tender depictions of everyday life—most famously The Laundresses—anchor a museum that still feels like a visit into a painter's family home rather than a grand institution.
