Spatenberg
Spatenberg is a forested conical limestone hill rising to 366 meters at the southern edge of Sondershausen in Thuringia's Kyffhäuser district. Crowned by a 19th-century observation tower and bearing the earthwork remnants of an 11th-century royal castle, it offers one of the best panoramas in northern Thuringia — from the Wipper Valley across the Kyffhäuser range and, on clear days, all the way to the Brocken in the Harz mountains. The hill's summit is marked by the Spatenbergturm, a sturdy limestone tower built in 1895 as a Bismarck monument and renovated in the mid-1980s by local volunteers. Its 86 steps lead to a crenellated platform with sweeping views. The hill itself sits at the heart of a thousand-year drama of royal ambition, rebellion, and destruction.
