Monumento Bernardo O'Higgins
At the junction of Avenida Independencia and 21 de Mayo, the Monumento Bernardo O'Higgins gives Punta Arenas one of its clearest reminders of Chile's national story. The statue is set in a public plaza on a broad, planted median, so visitors usually encounter it while walking through the city rather than seeking out a separate attraction. Bernardo O'Higgins is regarded as one of the founding figures of Chilean independence, and the monument deliberately ties that national identity to the far south. Its creator, sculptor José Caroca, inaugurated the work in 1957 after a commission from the Municipality of Punta Arenas.
