Museu do Queijo Coalho

The Queijo Coalho Museum in Garanhuns, Pernambuco, is a lively interactive space dedicated to one of northeastern Brazil's most iconic foods: queijo coalho, the firm, slightly salty grilling cheese that defines the region's cuisine. Housed within the rural campus of the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco (UFRPE) in the Mundaú neighborhood, the museum guides visitors through five distinct spaces—from a garden of forage palms that feed the area's dairy cows to a sensory tasting room at the end. Opened in late 2019 and backed by the state science foundation Facepe, the museum blends history, biology, and chemistry into a hands-on experience that appeals equally to families, school groups, and food-curious travelers. Guided tours—often in partnership with Garanhuns's celebrated Winter Festival (FIG)—walk you through the cultural story of the Agreste milk basin, show you the science behind cheese-making, and finish with a tasting of multiple regional cheeses.
