The best time to visit Campeche is from November to February, when temperatures are pleasant and rainfall is lower. March through May are the hottest months, with high humidity. The rainy season runs from June to October, with September and October being the wettest. The city's Carnival in February is a well-known celebration, but the dry, cooler winter months are the most comfortable for exploring.
Stay in the historic center, Zona Centro, for easy access to Independence Square, the malecón, and the city walls. It suits first-time visitors and those who like walking. The Barrio de Guadalupe and Barrio de Santa Ana, just outside the walls, offer a quieter, more local feel. Hotels like Hotel Plaza Campeche, Castelmar Hotel, and Las Lupitas Hotel Boutique are in these areas.
Start at Independence Square, the historic heart with its cathedral and arcades. The Campeche Archaeological Museum, inside Fort San Miguel, holds Maya treasures and city views. Walk the Malecón for sea breezes and sunset. Puerta de Tierra and Puerta de Mar are the surviving city gates, part of the old fortifications. Ximbal Parque Recreativo offers a green break with playgrounds and paths.
You can take full-day tours to Calakmul, a vast Maya site deep in the jungle, and Balamkú, known for its stucco frieze. Other tours go to Edzná, an impressive archaeological zone with a five-story temple, and to the towns of Kankí, Becal, Hecelchakán, and Pomuch, where you can see traditional crafts and local culture. Haciendas along the Camino Real are also a common day trip, offering a look at the region's colonial history.
Plan 3 days for Campeche: one for the historic center, including Independence Square, Puerta de Tierra, and Puerta de Mar; another for the Malecón and the Campeche Archaeological Museum at Fort San Miguel; and a third for Ximbal Parque Recreativo and the smaller museums like the Maya Architecture Museum. If you want to visit Calakmul or Edzná, add an extra day for a full-day tour.
