Banff

The best time to visit Banff is from June to September, when daytime highs range from 18°C to 24°C and nights stay above freezing. July and August are the warmest and driest months, ideal for hiking and sightseeing. June has the most rain, while May and October are cooler and wetter, with snow possible at higher elevations. Winter months are very cold, with January and December averaging -4°C to -5°C highs.

Stay in Banff's town center along Banff Avenue for easy access to shops, restaurants, and the visitor centre. The area around Bow Avenue is quieter, near the river and Bow Falls. The Juniper Hotel & Bistro sits on Tunnel Mountain Road, a short drive from downtown, offering a more secluded setting. The Rundlestone Lodge and Irwin's Mountain Inn are also on Banff Avenue, keeping you close to everything.

Banff National Park is the core of the visit, with its mountain scenery and wildlife. The Gondola takes you up Sulphur Mountain for sweeping views. Johnston Canyon has a boardwalk trail leading to waterfalls. Bow Falls is a dramatic waterfall just a short walk from town. Cave and Basin marks the birthplace of Canada's national parks, and the Visitor Centre is handy for maps and trail advice.

Full-day tours from Banff head to Lake Louise, Moraine Lake, Emerald Lake, and Johnston Canyon, each offering distinct mountain scenery. Lake Louise and Moraine Lake are known for their turquoise glacial lakes, while Emerald Lake sits in Yoho National Park. Johnston Canyon features waterfalls and a scenic walkway. These trips cover the highlights of the surrounding national parks.

Plan 3 to 4 days. In 2 days you can see Banff National Park, ride the Banff Gondola, walk to Bow Falls, and visit the Cave and Basin National Historic Site. Add a third day for Johnston Canyon and the Hoodoos Viewpoint. If you want to take a full-day tour to Lake Louise or Moraine Lake, add an extra day.
